Craving an organised holiday schedule? Follow this cheat sheet to master cooking prep during the party season.

Craving an organised holiday schedule? Follow this cheat sheet to master cooking prep during the party season.

1. DIY Totally Edible

Create a centrepiece and a talking point at the same time by scooping fruit from a watermelon to create a bowl. Blend the reserved fruit with juice and flavourings to create a punch, and then serve from the bowl.

2. Get Popping

Popcorn is a budget-friendly, crowd-pleasing snack. Jazz it up with butter and spices, or create a sweet nibble mix by adding choc-dipped pretzels and dried fruit.

3. Double-duty Tea Towels

Wrap some gifts in tea towels; your recipients will love the new kitchen goodie. Plus, you'll be helping offset the 150,000 kilometers of wrapping paper that Australians use annually!

4. Fast Fix

Short on money and time to entertain? Grab plain doughnuts and drizzle with melted chocolate, or thread pikelets onto skewers and top with chocolate spread and sprinkles for some quick edible fun.

5. Freezer Pleaser

Cut, label and freeze leftover bread for up to three months for a quick canapés such as bruschetta and crostini. You'll also save time and money by not having to buy wafers.

6. Salvage The Jar

Keep your empty glass condiment jars and reuse them as drinking vessels, or for homemade preserves and gifts, such as cookies.

7. Stock Up

Keep an eye out for specials and start collecting nibbles and drinks for entertaining prior to the crazy festive season.

8. Make-ahead Magic

Simply make a double batch of fruit mince (it's cheaper to buy fruit in bulk), then gives as gifts in jars (see tip 6) or make our decadent Fruit-mince pie ice cream, p70.
